IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

In our music video we use a linear narrative; the story line follows a girl through time, from the 60's to 2010. This is not often common in dubstep music videos as many take a concept basis where one theme is symbolised throughout (for example in Night by Skream in which feet walking and a car driving is repeated throughout). However, we did follow the convention of dance in our music video. Many music video's under a dancing genre such as dubstep, where the songs are mainly used in clubs, incorporate dancing in their music videos.
Conventionally, these music videos show clips of a club (as it is typical of their target audience to go to clubs) and we followed this convention in our music video.

Magnetic Man- I Need Air

We also used editing in our music video which follows the conventions of all dubstep music videos. Editing synergizes with the music as the music is modified with computerised sounds as with the images on screen which have been edited on using computerised material. Our music video follows the conventions of main-stream dubstep such as Katy B's video. These video's consist a narrative/ performance base (mainstream artists are more interested in selling their image, thus incorperating themselves in their video). We followed the narrative in our music video but we used consept for the dance scenes. Unlike some dubstep music video's we didn't incorperate the artist either in the narrative or in performance because this is not conventional for all dubstep music videos. Especially because Cragga has not shown himself in any of his other music video's we did not believe it was conventional to show performance in ours.

Conventionally to most music video's, our music video syncronised the music to the visuals. For example the dancing slows down when the beat slows down (show small clip) as like in Magnetic Man- I need air in which the dancers are put in slow motion when the music becomes less intense. Under Goodwin's theory, our music video conventionally shows the realtionship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics mainly being 'Mr. Postman', we follow a girl through the ages waiting for that 'communication' from her man. We used black and white effect to distinguish old (the 60's) from the new (2010). This is a common and clear way to show past and present.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?

In our music video we encorperate clips of a club which synergise with the back cover of the digipak because this is a silhouette picture of a girl dancing.

The fact that it is a girl dancing further compliments the music video (as the main character in the video is a girl).
The front cover does not correlate that much to music video but because 'Mr. Postman' is not the only track on the CD it would be bias to use images and ideas used in our music video for the front album cover as there are other songs and (would be) other music video's. The picture shows the attitude and style of the artist and the fact that he is looking away symbolises 'looking back into the past' which conforms to our music video as some clips are set in the past.

The advertisement uses a blue and black background which compliments the back cover of the album.

The font used for the information on the ad is also similar to that of the album.

the picture of the album encorperated onto the advertisement further combines all our work together.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?

When i showed the advertisement to a class of media students, all 9 stuents guessed that it was an advertisement for a dubstep album. This shows that both album cover and advertisements followed the right conventions of our chosen genre and followed research findings (such as the album cover being on the right and information on the left).

When I asked an audience what ending would be best in a questionnaire, i followed the majority's request which was to hug. When I later showed the film to an audience and asked them 'why were they hugging?' all but one said it was because the girl and the boy had just met after a long time, showing that they had missed eachother. This is correct and I have learnt that following the audience's expectations makes it more clear to them because they are the audience and however they interpret the meaning is the main important thing because they are the ones who are watching it.

HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?

In my research stage, I used youtube to view music video's under the genre dubstep. Youtube enabled me to share music video's with my group as I could embed the code onto my blog where my group members were able to watch the specific video's which were giving me inspiration for our music video and vice versa. If youtube was not available, it would have been very difficult obtaining songs and music videos of dubstep artists becuase they are rarely played on the radio or and only mainstream video's are played on music channels. I could have used specific dubstep websites but youtube was by far the easiest way to research my chosen genre. Youtube is one of the only ways to embed other people's video's and I was able to embed the video's straight from youtube onto my blog. Youtube was effecient and useful for all stages in making my music video. It not only offered most of the songs I was looking for, but also suggested other songs under the same genre, broadening my research even further

For evample when typing in 'Mr. Postman' by Cragga,

A list of other dubstep songs are desplayed which I was able to listen to which was especially useful for by research stage.

Was used for getting research about the Marvellettes, historical and political issues at the time of the 60's which was useful when planning our music video. I also used google for a wide range of information such as the date of when computers started getting popular which was in the 80's (this provided basis for 80's section of our music video as this was centred around the computer). Google provided me information about dubstep and the origins of the genre, facts about club life, the scene of dubstep who and what type of people enjoy dubstep. Via google I was able to obtain most of my research and facts about dubstep as a genre.

Imovie HD- primary editing as it was simple to cut clips and form the basis of our music video

Final cut pro- used to develop the editing of the clips from Imovie. (more choices and more edit options available on final cut pro, but harder to use simple options such as cut, transition and copy

We used facebook to plan when we are going to film using the message or chat link. We also used it for organising our club scene, adding friends from school onto the event with the time, date and location written down.

Photoshop was used when making the digipak and advertisement. For example copying the image of the dancing dirl onto photoshop and editing away the background, making it into a silhouette.
